This essay analysis builds on the decade-long experience of the team of Former Admissions Officers at ISBmantra, who have reviewed thousands of ISB applications as part of the core admissions team.

Business school essay prompts are an opportunity to present your profile in depth – highlighting key qualities, values, and experiences through relevant examples. The strongest responses go beyond the literal meaning of the questions and present a holistic view of your personal and professional journey, using the prompts as a base rather than a limitation.

In this article, we will analyze and share helpful tips on how to write the ISB essays for the 2026 admissions and also share a few ISB sample essay structures to solidify your understanding.

Understanding ISB’s Expectations

ISB looks for candidates who can thrive in its high-paced, one‑year program, excel in a competitive peer group, and position themselves well for post‑MBA recruitment. Given the intensity (placements begin just over six months in), your essays should help the admissions team assess:

Quality and impact of your past experience

Evidence of learnability and resilience

Ability to manage people, projects, and/or complex problems

These factors are as important for admission as they are for post‑MBA employability. Keep them in view as you select stories and structure each essay.

For the 2026 intake, you must answer 2 mandatory essay questions for the Post Graduate Programme (PGP). The word limit for both essays is 400 words. Additionally, the application provides the opportunity to answer an Optional Essay with a 250-word limit. If you are a re-applicant, you are required to answer a re-applicant essay in no more than 200 words.

ISB PGP Essay Questions for 2026 Intake

What unique experiences have shaped who you are? What have these experiences taught you about leadership and the kind of leader you aspire to be? (400 words)

What intellectual experiences have influenced your approach to learning and have led you to pursue an MBA? Please describe using anecdotes from your own experiences. (400 words)

Share with us any intellectual pursuits, unique perspectives, or experiences that you pursued that have shaped your worldview, your growth through these pursuits, and how they could potentially contribute to our learning community. (Optional – 250 words)

Re‑applicant Essay: What are the key personal and professional developments since your previous application at ISB, that you would like to highlight to the admissions committee? (250 words)

At ISBmantra, with our Core Team of Former ISB Admissions Officers, we have mentored 3000+ applicants over the last 12 years. Here is our analysis of the ISB PGP 2026 Application essays.

ISB PGP Essay 1 Analysis

What unique experiences have shaped who you are? What have these experiences taught you about leadership and the kind of leader you aspire to be? (400 words)

First things first – it’s a business school application and not an essay writing competition. Before you start compiling key points and stories to be communicated through this essay, ask yourself if these points and stories will be relevant to a business school.

To answer this question, break it down into three parts –

Formative experiences (personal and/or professional) that shaped your values, decision‑making, and people‑leadership style.

How these experiences define/influence your leadership style.

How you envision honing your leadership style/qualities further.

Identify experiences that were “foundational” enough to “shape” you in certain ways. These need not be from your childhood. A certain experience in college, for instance, can transform your perspective about taking initiatives. A certain experience at work in your initial days can teach you empathy. Since the essay prompt asks for experiences that “shaped who you are”, it is very less likely that a very recent experience would fit in here so well.

Extract clear leadership takeaways from these experiences. Discuss how the experiences shaped your leadership perspective and style. With these learnings, what kind of leader do you aspire to be? What are some of the leadership qualities that you further seek to develop?

If space permits, show evidence of application — how you’ve already exercised these lessons.

End with a forward‑looking leadership aspiration that naturally grows from these lessons.

Choosing the right material: – Prefer high‑context, high‑stakes moments over generic wins (e.g., influencing senior stakeholders without authority; steering a team through ambiguity; taking an unpopular but ethical stand; building from scratch under constraints).

ISB PGP Essay 1 Sample Structure

1. Opening theme: Your leadership north star (e.g., “I lead by designing clarity in chaos,” or “I’ve learned to move people through empathy and evidence.”)

2. Formative Experience #1: Context – Challenge – Actions – Outcome – Leadership lesson (e.g., influence without authority, bias‑to‑action, stakeholder mapping, psychological safety).

3. Formative Experience #2: Different setting that complements #1 – Actions – Outcome – Leadership lesson (e.g., coaching others, building mechanisms, ethical decision‑making, resilience).

4. Mini‑application vignette (1–2 lines): A quick example where you applied a prior lesson to deliver impact.

5. Aspirational close: The kind of leader you’re becoming and how you intend to scale these behaviors in larger, more complex settings – during ISB, as well as Post-ISB.

Leadership lenses you may explore (pick 2–3):

Direction: framing problems; setting hypotheses; prioritization

Alignment: stakeholder mapping; collaboration; conflict resolution

Execution: effective planning; building SOPs; review cadences; course‑correction

Empowerment: coaching; feedback loops; training; inclusion

Judgment: ethics; risk-taking; long‑term vs short‑term choices

ISB PGP Essay 2 Analysis

What intellectual experiences have influenced your approach to learning and have led you to pursue an MBA? Describe using anecdotes from your own experiences. (400 words)

This question is worded interestingly to explore the gaps in your current skillset and the intellectual experiences that have enhanced your knowledge, skills, and approach. Since the question directly connects these experiences with your decision to pursue an MBA, the anecdotes/instances/stories must balance presenting a strong candidature with the need for an MBA.

The simplest way to do so is to present 2-3 of your best professional examples, where you were a part of some exciting project/initiative, how the projects were challenging and intellectually stimulating, how they allowed you to work with smart people/stakeholders, and how in the process, you discovered your own potential to do better by augmenting your skills. Be careful not to present yourself as an external observer while narrating these anecdotes. These are supposed to be “experiences”, and you would rather show that your involvement and contribution was significant enough.

Can these “intellectual experiences” be from outside the workplace? Probably, yes! Preferably, no! If you have some non-work related stories that are worth telling, try your best fitting them in the first essay. But if you think that the story/experience relates really well with the need for an MBA, and connects fairly well with your future plans, then why not!

Should this also be the place to present your career goals and why ISB? This is a very nuanced decision, so read this carefully –

In terms of your learning and skillset, an MBA will have the maximum impact on your short-term plans – hence you may use a few lines to present your short term plans but not try to go too deep into discussing what you would like to do 10 years from now.

This isn’t a generic “Why MBA” essay. So try to keep this section short, and specific to the capabilities that you directly associate with your short-to-medium term success.

If this were a dedicated “Why MBA” essay, we could have taken the liberty to discuss “Why ISB” as well – certainly not in this section and not in this essay!! You will need to focus on experiences and anecdotes, so let’s focus on those, without trying to please ISB by telling them that they have the best profs and the best curriculum and the best infrastructure in the world.

ISB PGP Essay 2 – Sample Essay Structure

Skip the introductory paragraph that you were planning and dive straight into your first story.

Conclude the first story with how the experience enriched your learning, perspective, and outlook. Control your urge to talk about the need for an MBA already. Let this be a build up to the concluding paragraph.

Follow the Situation-Task-Action-Result format, but invest most space in detailing the challenges and your response to them.

Transition to the next story or situation. Touch upon what you learnt and how you would like to further that learning to perform better.

Add another experience/story if space allows

Pack a punch with a good summary of your experiences, how they allowed you to develop some exciting skills, opened you to the need for an MBA to challenge yourself further, and grow in your chosen field, industry, etc. (provide a line or two of specific details here).

A tight way to tell each story: STAR + LEE – S/T/A/R: Situation – Task – Action – Result – L/E/E: Learning (concepts, frameworks, methods) – Evolution (how your approach changed) – Extension (how you reapplied it later).

Recommended flow:

1. Dive straight into Experience #1: Set the intellectual challenge; show your method (frameworks, experiments, models), the trade‑offs you weighed, and what you learned.

2. Experience #2: Different domain/skill (e.g., from analytics to GTM; from operations to strategy). Again, emphasize method – learning – evolution.

3. (Optional) Short Experience #3 if it adds a new dimension (e.g., cross‑cultural or interdisciplinary learning).

4. Conclusion: Name 2–3 capabilities you now aim to formalize at ISB (e.g., strategy under uncertainty, data‑driven decision‑making, organization design, product leadership, corporate finance). Relate it with your future plans.

Avoid:

A résumé rehash; claims without method; long “why MBA” paragraphs; hobby stories without analytical depth.

ISB PGP Essay 3 (Optional) Analysis

Share intellectual pursuits, unique perspectives, or experiences that shaped your worldview and how they could contribute to our learning community. (250 words)

This is not a “miscellaneous achievements” parking lot. Treat it as a differentiation + contribution essay that answers two questions succinctly:

What is uncommon about you?

How will that tangibly benefit your peers at ISB?

Write it only if you can showcase credible uniqueness and a clear peer-learning payoff. Which also means that not writing this essay comes at the cost of not being able to establish how exactly you will be a valuable addition to the class (unless you strongly feel that the other essays are already doing that job for you).

What the prompt is really asking:

Identify intellectual pursuits or perspectives that gave you a distinctive way of seeing or solving problems (depth in a domain, bridging two fields, cross-cultural lenses, or creator/entrepreneurial work).

Show growth from those pursuits (skills, mindset shifts, judgment).

Translate that uniqueness into specific contributions to the ISB learning community (clubs, projects, case preps, workshops, speaker connects, ELP/practicum).

Choosing the right material:

Pick one primary USP (and at most one supporting angle). Fewer, richer examples beat lists.

Favor repeatable capabilities over one-off wins.

Ensure professional relevance (peers must be able to learn/apply it in cases, projects, or recruiting preps) instead of vague skills that may not find good relevance in an MBA program.

Two effective patterns:

1) Depth: “I bring unique depth in X” (industry, function, or craft) – how it shaped your worldview – how peers benefit (case discussions, projects, treks, speaker connects).

2) Breadth: “I bridge X and Y communities” (e.g., Engineering – Policy; India – SEA) – worldview – how peers benefit.

What is “Worldview” (in this case)?

The term “worldview” can be misleading if you try to apply the literal meaning. Relate it to “your world” in this context – which is your industry, your function, your organization, the teams that you work with, the professional values that you have developed, etc. Therefore, worldview, in this case, isn’t necessarily global perspective. It is just your perspective about the world you are contributing to.

ISB PGP Essay 3 – Sample Essay Structure

Crisp Summary of your USPs (40-50 words): List your key differentiators and specific areas/domains/functions you can claim expertise in.

Illustration #1 (80-100 words): Context – what you pursued – what made it intellectually demanding – what you learned – how it changed your worldview.

Illustration #2 (optional, 60–80 words): A complementary vignette that shows the USP in a different setting (cross-functional, cross-cultural, or entrepreneurial/intrapreneurial lens).

Contribution (60–80 words): 2–3 specific ways you will enhance peer learning at ISB (club roles, workshops, case preps, ELP/practicum, founder support).

DO NOT make this is a “Why ISB” essay. This essay is about “You” and how you will contribute at ISB, instead of presenting how you will benefit from opportunities at ISB.

ISB PGP Re-applicant Essay Analysis

What are the key personal and professional developments since your previous application? (250 words)

Almost one-fourth of the applicants at ISBmantra are reapplicants to ISB. Being a reapplicant doesn’t put you to any disadvantage at all! Rather, an improved test score, profile, and application, places you in a good position to get the attention of the admissions team.

What is the reapplicant essay asking?

Since your last application to ISB, did you create opportunities to enhance your skills? You presented certain career goals in your last application. Did you take up professional initiatives and self-learning opportunities to move towards your professed career goals? Did you assess what might have gone wrong, talked to alumni and industry experts, and attempted to position yourself better this year?

If your GMAT score was not good enough, were you willing to push yourself and retake the test? If you end up scoring the same again – the school will still appreciate your intent and your commitment to the goal of doing the MBA at ISB.

Talk about the new projects, new learnings from these projects, things that you got to do for the first time, and interactions you have had that had an impact on you and your career plans. Do not forget to include the experiences that helped you refine your core and soft skills further.

If you presented a goal or a career plan last year that you failed to justify in the interview; or if, after more thorough research, you have decided to opt for an alternative plan that you can validate, do not hesitate to make a statement.

Feel free to present the specifics of the research you engaged in to arrive at a more rational career plan (if you have a different career plan now). For all logical purposes, this is a better approach than presenting the same career plans again, when you are not too confident about being able to substantiate them in the interview.

Content Ideas:

New scope/impact: promotions, expanded ownership, bigger teams/budgets, first‑time initiatives

Skill upgrades: certifications, toolkits, languages, domain depth; how you applied them

Goals sharpened: refined post‑MBA plan with better evidence, stronger connects with target industry professionals, etc.

Stronger Intent to apply to ISB: Connectiong with ISB alumni, etc.

ISB PGP Reapplicant Essay – Sample Essay Structure

1. Open with momentum: one‑liner that signals upward shift

2. Two concise proof paragraphs (scope/skills – results)

3. Close with readiness: why you’re a stronger bet for ISB now

Breaking down the ISB Admissions process with Former Sr Admissions Manager

How to deal with a low GMAT/GRE score

What does ISB look for in its candidates and much more

The Indian School of Business (ISB) has launched an exciting new 20-month Post Graduate Programme in Management for Young Leaders (PGPYL or PGP YL). This program, specifically designed for recent graduates and professionals with up to two years of work experience, adds a fresh dimension to ISB’s renowned portfolio. If you’re someone at the start of your career and looking for a globally competitive program, this could be just what you’re looking for!

But how does it compare to similar programs offered by top business schools in the US and Europe, like MiM (Master in Management) programs? And how is it different from ISB’s flagship one-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP)? Let’s break it down so you can see how this new offering could be the right fit for you.

The new program aims to cater to young professionals who want a management degree but lack significant work experience. It’s ISB’s answer to the growing demand for longer, more immersive management programs designed for those at the beginning of their careers.

According to ISB, this 20-month course will feature a blend of classroom learning, experiential projects, and a required summer internship. This gives participants practical exposure to real-world business environments—a critical need for those with little to no work experience.

You might be wondering how ISB’s new PGPYL compares to its well-established 12-month PGP. Here’s a quick look at the differences:

Criteria

ISB PGP YL

ISB PGP

Target Audience

Up to 2 years of work experience

2+ years of professional experience

Program Length

20 months

12 months

Focus Areas

Foundational business knowledge, experiential learning, mandatory internship

Advanced management concepts, leadership development

Experiential Learning

Industry projects, Innovation Lab, Business Design Lab, summer internship

Action Learning Projects (ALP), international exchange opportunities

Cost

₹29 lakh (approx.)

₹40 lakh (approx.)

Campus Location

Hyderabad

Hyderabad and Mohali

The key difference between the two programs is the target audience and depth of work experience expected. If you’re just starting out, the ISB PGPYL might be more aligned with your needs, offering a longer runway to develop critical management skills alongside hands-on projects.

PGP YL Essay 1

Describe a specific personal situation in which you assumed a leadership role without formal authority. How did you motivate and influence others during this experience? What challenges did you encounter, and what insights did you gain about your leadership abilities as a result of this experience? (400 words max)

PGP YL Essay 1 Detailed Analysis

To begin with, let’s break the question down into different parts and ensure that we read between the lines:

ISB is asking for a situation where you weren’t a “designated leader”. With hierarchy and designation, one is automatically placed in a position of authority. It is, therefore, essential that you pick a situation where you assumed greater responsibility, and demonstrated leadership in a setting that wasn’t already formalized.

Next, you need to think of the stakeholders involved, the people you worked with, and how you articulated your leadership to drive the direction of the situation, influence the people involved, and collaborate effectively.

Challenges always remain crucial while detailing an experience or situation. The reader will be able to evaluate the scope of your contribution in the context of how challenging the situation was.

Finally, the question seeks to peek into the insights you gained about yourself while navigating the situation, challenges, and accomplishments in the process.

Key Areas to Focus On

The Situation: Begin by identifying a clear and specific scenario where you assumed a leadership role without formal authority. This could be from a professional setting, a college project, or even a community initiative. What matters is that it highlights your leadership in a situation where you didn’t have an official title or mandate.

Motivating and Influencing Others: Leadership isn’t just about giving orders; it’s about bringing people together to work towards a shared goal. Explain the strategies you used to motivate your peers or team members. Did you lead by example, use persuasion, foster collaboration, or leverage your expertise? What made others want to work with you?

Challenges Faced: Every leadership situation comes with its own set of challenges. This is your chance to show resilience and problem-solving skills. Whether you faced resistance from team members, communication barriers, or logistical issues, highlight the challenges and explain how you navigated them.

Insights Gained: The crux of this essay lies in self-reflection. After leading through a challenging situation, what did you learn about yourself as a leader? Did the experience help you realize your strengths or expose areas for growth? This reflection will give ISB a deeper understanding of your leadership potential.

PGP YL Essay 1 Sample Essay Structure

Introduction (~100 words): Set the stage by describing the context and why you had to assume a leadership role without formal authority.

Body (~200 words): Discuss the challenges you faced or anticipated, how you dealt with the situation, the people, and the problem. Go deeper into what you did and your thought process behind your actions.

Conclusion (~100 words): Reflect on the key insights you gained about your leadership abilities. How did the experience shape your understanding of leadership, and how will it influence you in the future?

Tips for a Strong PGP YL Essay

Initiative: Show that you are willing to step up when needed, even in situations where you don’t have formal authority.

Team Dynamics: Demonstrate that you can work well with others, understanding how to motivate and inspire them.

Self-awareness: Reflecting on what you learned from the experience is crucial. ISB values introspective candidates who can identify strengths and areas for improvement.

PGP YL Essay 2

What unique experiences and perspectives do you bring to your class? How do you intend to contribute to the diversity of thought and ideas within the programme? Please provide specific examples to illustrate your points. (400 words max)

PGP YL Essay 2 Detailed Analysis

In a class of about 100 students, it remains critical that each student add significant value to the learning of their peers. This essay specifically seeks to understand how you will add to the cohort’s diversity and leverage your experiences, perspectives, and ideas to enrich the cohort’s experience. Here are the key components of the question:

1. What are some of the differentiating factors in your profile? What unique experiences (personal and professional) do you bring to the class?

2. How are these differentiators going to be relevant to the PGP YL class? What are some of the ways you envision contributing, while pursuing the program, based on your past experiences and learnings?

3. Among all your experiences, can you present a few in greater detail? No better way to say it than to “show”.

Key Areas to Focus On

Highlight Unique Experiences: This is the heart of the essay. Think about the personal and professional experiences that set you apart from other applicants. These could be cultural, professional, or personal experiences that have shaped your worldview and approach to problem-solving. Real, specific examples will add significantly higher value than vague references from the past.

Diversity of Thought: Beyond listing your unique experiences, explain how they contribute to the diversity of thought in the classroom. How do they enable you to bring new ideas, contribute to team settings, collaborate more effectively, or offer fresh insights?

Specific Contributions: ISB is keen on actionable contributions. Think about specific ways you intend to contribute to class discussions, clubs, or group projects. Provide concrete examples of how your background will add value to the learning environment at ISB.

Align with ISB’s Collaborative Culture: Show that you understand and appreciate ISB’s focus on peer learning. Highlight how your unique perspectives can foster collaboration and contribute to the overall class experience.

PGP YL Essay 2 Sample Essay Structure

Introduction (~50 words): Open with your key strengths and uniqueness that should get the reader interested in learning more about you.

Evidence (~200 words): Touch upon your key experiences and provide details of at least two specific examples.

Contribution (~150 words): Build on your examples to explain what strengths you bring to the class. Relate these strengths with specific ways you will be able to contribute to the class.

Tips for a Strong PGP YL Essay

Diversity of Experiences: Touch upon a range of experiences, touching upon both personal and professional strengths.

Ability to Contribute: Highlighting how you will actively contribute to the program shows ISB that you will be an engaged, proactive participant in their peer-learning model.

Specific Areas of Contribution: Once you have identified how you can contribute, research further and go deeper into developing a stronger understanding of the program and identify areas of contribution that are specific enough.

PGP YL Essay 3

What impact do you aim to create after completing the PGP YL programme? Please share your medium- to long-term career plans, including any specific challenges you anticipate facing along the way. (250 words max)

PGP YL Essay 3 Detailed Analysis

This essay prompt requires you to present your career plans – atypical of most business school applications. All business schools understand the changing industry dynamics and do not expect you to have an exact plan, but a larger vision and aspiration positions you as a candidate who is more likely to succeed than someone with no clear plans ahead. Above all, it’s important to understand that even though the essay prompt opens with “What impact do you aim to create …” – the expectation is to learn about the professional impact you seek to create in your target industry, function, and/or organization – without getting trapped into overemphasizing social impact.

Key Areas to Focus On

Career Plan: The industry/function/role you aspire to work in, post-MBA. What future roles it will lead to, and how do you envision your career progression?

Professional Readiness: It doesn’t take anything to present any career plan – be it working with the MBBs, getting recruited by one of the FAANG companies, or starting one’s own venture. The key is to establish how your past academic and professional experiences uniquely position you to excel in your plans.

Vision for Impact: The long-term impact you see yourself creating by pursuing your desired career path. Whether your focus is on industry innovation, social entrepreneurship, or driving positive change in your community, you need to articulate a vision that goes beyond personal success.

Challenges Anticipated: Demonstrating foresight is crucial. Identify the key challenges you may face as you work towards your goals. These could include industry competition, market dynamics, skill gaps, or broader economic challenges. Talking about the potential gaps and obstacles you anticipate facing will present you as a prepared and well-researched candidate.

Sample Structure

Professional Summary (~90 words): Start with the academic and professional components of your profile that immediately establish your potential to pursue your desired career path.

Career Plan (~80 words): Explain your medium to long-term career plans. Be specific about the roles you intend to pursue, impact you expect to create, and how you see yourself progressing in your career.

Need for PGP YL (~80 words): Identify the challenges you anticipate facing. Conclude with how the PGP YL will help you overcome these challenges and achieve your long-term goals.

Tips for a Strong PGP YL Essay

Practical Career Planning: While it’s important to have big aspirations, ISB also values practical career planning. Show that you have thought through your next steps after the program and have a realistic path to achieving your goals.

Research about your Goals: Demonstrate some logic and research to your plans instead of just presenting a set of dreams and wishes.

Research about ISB: It is important to know if ISB is the best choice for you and present specific aspects of the program that will help you prepare well for career.

Final Thoughts: Crafting Winning Essays for ISB PGP YL

When writing these essays, remember that ISB is not just evaluating your past achievements or your intellectual capacity. They want to see how you think, how you lead, and how you can contribute to their community. Leadership without authority and contributions to diversity are not just about showing what you’ve done, but about demonstrating your potential for growth and collaboration in a competitive, peer-driven environment.

By providing detailed examples and thoughtful reflection, your essays can showcase the traits that ISB values most in their candidates – initiative, diversity of thought, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to the learning experience of others.

Guidelines to Build an MBA Resume/CV for ISB

Creating an impactful MBA resume involves more than listing your experiences and qualifications. The following guidelines will help you craft a resume that stands out and effectively communicates your leadership and accomplishments.

Keep it Concise

Aim for One Page: Regardless of your extensive work experience, an MBA resume should be concise. A one-page resume forces you to prioritize the most impactful experiences.

Focus on Quality Over Quantity

Quality Points Matter: Instead of listing numerous points, focus on the most important points that demonstrate significant achievements and leadership.

Demonstrate Leadership Beyond Titles

Leadership Can Be Shown in Any Role: Leadership is not confined to high-ranking positions. Demonstrate leadership through initiatives and impactful contributions. Highlight initiatives or instances where you led a project or improved processes, even if these were outside your official job scope.

Avoid Jargon

Simplicity is Key: Jargon can obscure your message. Ensure that your resume is understandable by individuals outside your specific industry.

Highlight Accomplishments, Not Responsibilities

Accomplishment-Oriented: Focus on what you achieved rather than what you were responsible for. Quantify your accomplishments where possible to provide concrete evidence of your impact. For example, instead of saying “Responsible for sales strategy,” say “Increased sales by 20% through innovative strategy implementation.”

Reflect Future Plans and Transferable Skills

Demonstrated Interest: If transitioning to a new field (e.g., from engineering to finance), emphasize any exposure or interest you have in the new field.

Introduce your organization

Organizational Credibility: If you aren’t working with the likes of Google or Microsoft, it is a good practice to add a line just under the name of your organization, providing more details about the scale, size, nature of work, etc. details to establish the credibility of your organization.

Format your Resume Well

MBA Focused Formatting: MBA resumes do not expect you to add typical sections like Career Summary, Objective, Key Skills, Hobbies, etc. Ideally, use the format prescribed in the application, or ask your MBA counselor for the right format.

Common Resume Mistakes to Avoid

Overloading with Information: Avoid the temptation to include every detail. Stick to the most impactful and relevant experiences.

Focusing too much on titles and designations: Leadership is shown through actions and results, not just titles.

Relying on Jargon: Jargon can alienate your audience. Use simple, clear language.

By following these guidelines, you can build an MBA resume that effectively showcases your leadership, achievements, and potential, making a strong impression on admissions committees.

Additional Resume/CV Tips for ISB Admissions

Use reverse chronological order within each section, listing the most recent positions/activities first.

Emphasize results (quantitative or qualitative) when possible; results can give your reader a better understanding of the scope of your work and how it contributed to an organization.

Use a readable font size (10 to 12).

Avoid long bullets. If the statement gets too long, try breaking it into two bullets or sub-bullets.

Include white space and margins for easy skimming.

Avoid personal pronouns.

Do not include a job objective or personal statement.

Do not include a photo or your age.

Do not include ‘references available upon request’.

Use a consistent currency format while presenting amounts

Monetary figures:

K for thousand (e.g. $14K)

M for million (e.g. $20M)

B for billion (e.g. $50B)

Email addresses: all in lowercase and not underlined.

Do not underline words in headings and subheadings.

While presenting your interests/hobbies, demonstrate passion and present specific actions. Do not write cricket, travel, reading, or adventure sports. Pick fewer activities, but provide more details, e.g. Captained the college cricket team at the state level; Travelled to 15+ countries in the last 2 years, etc.

Maintain consistency in font size as well as style.

Use Action Verbs to start your bullets (as much as possible). More details on action verbs are presented on the next page.

Action Verbs

It is an established practice to present your resume bullets starting with action verbs. Using action verbs in a resume is crucial for several reasons. Action verbs help to instantly place you at the centre of the action and communicate to the reader your specific role in the task/project.

Use Action Verbs

Here are some examples of powerful action verbs categorized by skill areas:

From planning your GMAT/GRE well in time, to preparing the right strategy to present your profile, developing an application that stands out from the competition, and practicing well for the interview – a successful application may often require an applicant to commit 6-8 months of their time. ISB evaluates each part of the application and there is no “one” component that may result in an admit or a reject. It is important, therefore, to be detail-oriented, while developing the application, and be well-prepared with specific examples of one’s achievements, while preparing for the admissions interview.”

Now that you have an idea of the programs, deadlines, admission process, and the rest, let’s discuss which is the ideal round to apply.

In which ISB application round should you apply?

Applying in any round does not affect the chances of getting an admit at ISB. But if joining ISB is your dream and you have a strong academic, extracurricular or professional experience profile or if you wish to apply for scholarships or fee waiver, then it is advisable to apply in Round 1 which reduces the pressure to wait till the end.

You will be able to avail full tuition fee waiver only if you apply in Round 1. If you apply in Round 2 or Round 3, you can avail up to 75% of tuition fee waivers.

As per the data from gmatclub decision tracker, we understand the number of applications in round 1 is high compared to the number of applications in round 2 and round 3.

ISB PGP class of 2022

Number of applications

Number of interview invites

Percentage of interview invites

Number of students who got an admit

Conversion ratio (in %)

Total

781

419

53.6

210

50.1

Round 1

506

263

51.9

135

51.3

Round 2

249

142

57

68

47.8

Round 3

26

14

53.8

7

50

Though the conversion ratio is the same for all the rounds, it is always better to apply in round 1 which will give you enough time to prepare yourself for the PGP class.

If you are an international applicant, it is recommended to apply early in round 1 or round 2 as it may take time for the visa process and formalities. Remember it is always best to apply early than to stress yourself applying at the neck of the moment.

Prashant also made me aware of the international B school options and helped me shortlist the best ones suited for my profile and future goals. Working with Prashant and team for my interview prep also added significant value to my approach and content. It came as a reality check in the beginning, but I was prepared well through the process. This is a deferred admit program that ensures an admitted candidate a seat at the ISB PGP, after gaining approximately 2 years of full-time experience. Students in their final or pre-final year may apply through the YLP deadlines and secure an admit to the ISB PGP, as they complete college. The admitted candidates may then take up a full-time professional engagement of their choice, before joining ISB.

ISB YLP Stage-1 Essay Question

The Stage-1 Application Essay remains critical to one’s application, given that the essay is the only key component that the applicant is able to present to the admissions team, to communicate their best stories.

The following is the Stage-1 Essay Question for YLP 2024:

“Everyone is inclined towards a particular interest/goal which they are passionate about, be it in the field of academics or extra-curriculars. What is that one thing that you are passionate about? What are your current efforts in pursuing it, and what efforts will you put in the future to achieve that goal? (300 words max)”

ISB YLP Stage-1 Essay Analysis & Tips

The question seems to have multiple parts and essentially, we need to focus on addressing these four components of the question through the essay:

What is the one thing that you are passionate about?

Current Efforts or activities that prove that interest/passion

Future vision/plan in the context of your passion

Efforts in the future that may be aligned with your plans

The YLP Stage-1 essay question can often be confusing, since, outside the academics, the things we are passionate about as college students, are often not what we want to pursue as a career. Especially when the question allows you to wander in the area of “extra-curriculars”, it may be very misleading to start talking about how you love organizing college the college fest, but don’t intend to be an event planner.

One may be passionate about music, or sports, or other activities, but one may not always have a goal around that passion. The question, therefore, needs to be viewed from the lens of an MBA application, and a correlation needs to be developed between what you are passionate about and what your professional goals might be.

How do you go about it?

Think about something you really enjoy doing. It can be things like football or sudoku or travelling, etc. The problem is that in an MBA Application context, it is difficult to connect the dots forward, by talking about football, sudoku, or traveling. It will therefore be essential to connect the dots looking backward, and first identify what drives your interests and energy. Recall times when you did something that really got you hooked and that also has a larger applicability to it.

E.g., Organizing College fest – and how planning, people management, etc. interested you and going forward you would like to work on complex projects that test your people and project management skills.

Or, working with data, the knack for which you may have developed in college or internship, etc., and how you are passionate about the power of data to solve complex business problems.

Or, some paper you read on Machine Learning and how you have been intrigued by the idea since then. Talk about the internship that you recently took up in the area and what you want to achieve in the near future.

Or, some community work that you took up and that spurred your interest in large-scale social impact.

Or, some committee in college that you have been a part of and how that influenced you and your future plans (along with the passion with which you have been serving in the community).

These are just a few ideas to largely communicate that one would rather pick things that may further be relatable with one’s future plans if required – especially while building the YLP Stage 2 essay.

Then talk about your efforts during college, outside of college, virtually, etc. that have been aligned with your passion/interest. This will go on to validate your interest or passion and prove that you are committed to where your heart lies, thus implying that you will do what it takes to achieve your goals.

Conclude with how you will look to grow in this field, with specific efforts that you plan to put in and in what direction these efforts will help you grow.

The 300 word limit makes it all the more challenging to answer all the questions, but if you prepare well to include all these details, you will be able to differentiate your essay from the larger pool of applicants really well.

ISB YLP Stage-1 Sample Essay Structure

Intro – Start with establishing your passion or area of interest (50-60 words)

Provide some more details about your passion and any activities or initiatives that may further prove your passion in that area. (80-100 words)

Build on the current passion to present a logically feasible future plan, preferably in the professional context. It’s ok to present a direction instead of a concrete destination, since all applicants are college students and are yet to explore everything so concretely. (70-80 words)

Talk about how you foresee achieving your plan, any interim steps that you want to take, any milestones that you may have marked for yourself – essentially, any kind of effort that you expect to put in before, during, and after the YLP to help achieve your goals. (80-100 words)

ISB YLP Stage-2 Essay Question

The following is the Stage-2 Essay Question for YLP 2024:

"How would you describe your ideal career? Have you identified the skills that you would need to acquire to accomplish it? How does ISB play a role for you to realize your ideal career??"

ISB YLP Stage-2 Essay Analysis & Tips

Business schools often ask applicants about their career goals, both short-term and long-term.

Typically, these goals should be linked to one’s professional background or experience. However, for ISB YLP applicants with almost no full-time experience at the time of applying, linking future plans to past experiences can be challenging. As college freshers, our aspirations are often driven more by our interests than by our current skill sets. When asked by your parents what you wanted to do when you grew up, you probably picked professions such as pilot, doctor, policeman, scientist, or even cricketer or footballer. If you are writing your YLP Stage-2 essay, chances are high that you have pursued none of these streams.

At this point, therefore, do you have a better understanding of your future plans? Have you mapped out potential career paths that may lead you to a career you consider ideal? What kind of research have you done to understand your options well? Is an MBA critical to those plans? Answering these questions will allow you to present a coherent and thorough career story.

The essay prompt has three parts – all interlinked, but each part is nuanced in its own way. Let’s dive deeper into each part and understand what you can write in your essay.

1. How would you describe your ideal career?

It’s easy to state that you want to become a Management Consultant, a Product Manager, an Investment Banker, a Brand Manager, or an Entrepreneur – and none of these is a right or wrong career plan. What’s more important is to be able to “personalize” your answer. If your ideal career involves building innovative tech products that solve problems in the healthcare sector, that’s perfectly alright. Instead of getting stuck with designations and jargon, go ahead and present what you envision yourself doing. Stating that you want to become a Product Manager or the Chief Technology Officer of a large company means nothing if you don’t explain what you hope to be doing in that role and why it excites you.

2. Have you identified the skills that you would need to acquire to accomplish it?

Since there is no right or wrong answer to your ideal career, it all boils down to how you use this part of the essay to impress your application reader. You may have zeroed in on a career path, but to convince the ISB admissions team, you need to explain how you identified that goal, how you gained exposure to the field, how you developed an understanding of the role, and the key skills you seek to develop to excel in that role.

Steve Jobs famously said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.” This is your time to connect the dots looking backward. Did you take up any projects that got you interested in this field? Did you pursue internships where you gained more exposure to the industry or function? Did you talk to seniors from the industry to develop a better understanding of the field? Discuss anything and everything that shows you have really engaged with your chosen career path.

As a YLP applicant, remember two things while answering this part of the question:

Your full-time professional career may have just started. Do not try to present a lot of gaps in your skill set to justify the need for an MBA. The skills identified may be areas you are beginning to become good at and will continue to work on.

It’s alright not to have everything figured out perfectly. As long as you have a direction, you can take some time to understand the destination. Present a high-level direction in terms of the industry or the function that excites you and the career paths you would like to explore.

3. How does ISB play a role for you to realize your ideal career?

Applicants often end up investing a lot of space on “Why ISB”, but ISB knows what ISB has.

So, focus more on your plans and the skills you seek to acquire. While having a plan is crucial, it’s also acceptable to experiment, make mistakes, learn lessons, and adjust your career path. You cannot aspire to work with Google, not know how to get there, and just hope that ISB will magically secure your dream job. On the contrary, you have two important years to shape your career before you join ISB. You need to have a plan for the two years before ISB and at least two years after ISB.

Try and answer this part of the question by breaking it into three sub-questions:

What kind of roles do you expect to take up now?

What kind of roles would you like to take up after ISB?

How will ISB equip you to move from role 1 to role 2?

Answering these questions will convince the reader of your clarity of goals – even if they are expected to evolve with time. Avoid writing short fiction about your future plans. ISB is not looking to read a list of the best courses, professors, or international exchange programs it offers. Instead, talk about what you want to do and how specific components of the ISB program will be relevant to your goals.

“You are still in college and are yet to gain good exposure as you enter the corporate world. It’s completely alright, therefore, to also present a Plan B or “similar” options that you would be open to exploring.“

A.M.Kannan, Senior Mentor – ISBmantra, Former ISB Admissions Director

Quick Tips: ISB YLP Stage 2 Application Essay

Qn: How should I approach the essay on describing my ideal career?
Ans: Avoid generic designations and focus on specific roles or industries you are passionate about. Further, personalize your answer by explaining what you envision yourself doing and why it excites you.

Qn: What should I include when discussing the skills I need to acquire?
Ans: Discuss how you identified your career goal, your exposure to the field, and the skills you need to develop. Highlight any projects, internships, or conversations with industry professionals that informed your career choice.

Qn: How important is it to link my career goals to my current skills?
Ans: While it’s helpful to link your career goals to your current skills, it’s also acceptable to acknowledge that you are at the beginning of your journey. Emphasize your direction and the steps you plan to take to develop the necessary skills.

Qn: What should I mention about ISB’s role in realizing my career goals?
Ans: Outline the roles you expect to take up before and after ISB, and how ISB’s program will help you transition between these roles. Focus on specific components of ISB’s offerings that align with your career aspirations.

Qn: What should I do if I’m unsure about my career path?
Ans: It’s okay to be uncertain. Focus on your interests and the industries or functions that excite you. Use the next few years to explore different paths through internships and networking.

Qn: What common mistakes should I avoid in my YLP essay?
Ans: Avoid generic statements and clichés in your essays. Do not present career goals that are either too rigid or too open-ended – draw a balance between knowing what you want to do and being flexible as you progress in your career

Here is a step-by-step approach to creating a strong well-rounded profile. The image shows a snapshot of the steps to get into ISB.

Admission Eligibility for ISB PGP

These 3 criteria make you eligible for admission to the ISB PGP class of 2024:

You must hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline

You must have at least 24 months of full-time work experience as of March 31, 2024

You must have a valid GMAT/GRE score

How to get into ISB in 8 steps:

Introspect your need to join ISB

Do structured research on the programs at ISB

Take a look at the class profile

Analyze the ISB admissions committee’s expectations from the applicants

Understand the evaluation factors

Analyze your strengths and weaknesses

Create an application strategy

Prepare for the interview

Let’s discuss each of these steps in detail:

1. Introspect your need to join ISB

Everyone has a different need to do an MBA at ISB. Some want a career change, some need career growth and some want to take up a family business or become an entrepreneur. So it is necessary to first understand what is your primary goal to join ISB.

Analyze where you are in your career path and where you want to be moving forward. Make a clear short-term and long-term goal.

If you are looking to do an MBA to get a salary hike, calculate the ROI. ISB Placements, check this article to know about the ROI of the PGP program at ISB. Examine how your career growth will be by pursuing an MBA at ISB.

2. Do structured research on the programs at ISB

Once you are clear of what your goal is to join ISB, do detailed research on the programs at ISB. The one-year MBA residential program at ISB is a well-received program. Anyone with experience of 2 to 20 years can apply to this program.

However choosing the program according to your needs, and balancing your professional and personal life is also important. So, analyze and compare the various programs offered at ISB.

When you do research about the programs it is important to check the following factors

Let’s see what are some of the special features offered for the MBA programs at ISB.

Digital Headstart Module (DHM)

You can be a part of the ISB ecosystem before joining its flagship program PGP through the Digital Headstart Module (DHM). DHM was introduced by ISB in the year 2021 to adapt to the changes caused by COVID-19, which is held virtually for all the students before the beginning of classroom sessions and is a part of the curriculum.

ISB has replaced the first term with a 10-week Digital Headstart Module, the overall course duration still being 52 weeks. DHM comprises the following:

4 easy-paced, core courses

Independent research project opportunity under Faculty guidance

Learning and career growth events

O-week and LEAD

DHM will ultimately ease the on-campus experience for students, having already inducted them into 4 core foundational subjects and has given ample opportunities to interact and bond.

Experiential Learning Program (ELP)

ELP is a short-term project that falls under the purview of consulting. ISB tends to solicit these consulting projects from a number of different companies (domestic and international) and float it among teams of current students who may be interested in a particular sector or function.

The majority of the ELPs at ISB arrive between the end of the second term and the beginning of the fourth term. Taking up an ELP is equivalent to a two-credit course.

Leadership development program

You can also analyze your personality through the 360-degree feedback assessment tool. You will be given a systematically structured questionnaire for your personality assessment. From the feedback, you can develop your personal goal and strengthen your leadership skills.

Professional clubs

There are many professional clubs run by the ISB community. It gives you the opportunity to apply the classroom knowledge to the outside world. This helps you to strengthen your leadership qualities and life skills. You can connect with students with similar interests and you also get a chance to interact with the alumni and professionals from the respective field which helps to build your career.

After you have done the detailed structured research of the program, choose the program which aligns the learning outcome of the program with your goal to join ISB.

3. Take a look at the class profile

In a recent online session at ISB, alumni from different PGP batches discussed “How can the diversity at ISB add new dimensions to your career?”. According to the article, there are three things future applicants should be aware of

Expect the unexpected

With great diversity comes great learning

It is potential not achievement that matters

Diversity creates an impression at ISB. Every class of ISB has candidates from different age groups, with different levels of work experience, with different working backgrounds, and also from different parts of the country and world. Let’s take a look at the PGP class of 2023.

PGP class of 2023

From the class profile, we can understand the classroom has a combination of candidates with different demographics. However, when people from different backgrounds come together, there will be a better understanding of the subject. It also teaches us how to use your strengths in a diverse working environment.

4. Analyze the ISB admissions committee’s expectations from the applicants

You should be aware of the admission process and what the admission committee expects from the applicants. The admission process at ISB for its flagship program (PGP) happens in three rounds. It also has two deferred modes of entry – YLP and EEO.

ISB receives thousands of applications each year owing to it’s success over the years, so it is crucial to understand what the school is looking for and make sure your profile fits the criteria as well as stand out from the candidate pool.

Here are a few distinctive qualities that ISB looks for in their potential graduates according to our experts on board:

Leadership in past experiences

Consistent thought process

Ability to present logical arguments

Analytical acumen

Conviction in responses

Clarity of goals

5. Understand the evaluation factors

According to Vikram Singh, CEO & Chief Mentor at ISBmantra, Former Manager, Admissions & Financial Aid, ISB PGP/EEO/YLP, there are four important factors which are considered to decide an admit at ISB – academics, test score, interview performance, and quality & quantity of work.

The weightage of the evaluation factors may vary year on year based on the decision made by the admissions committee.

Evaluation factors

Weightage in %

Academics (from 12th std till undergraduate or postgraduate)

30

Test score (GMAT/GRE)

30

Interview performance

20

Quality and quantity of work

20

6. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses

Once you know what the ISB admission committee expects, you should analyze your profile and understand what are the strengths and weaknesses. As mentioned earlier, the weightage of the evaluation factors is not constant and it varies on a case-to-case basis.

By analyzing your profile, you should be able to figure out which part you should concentrate on to create a well-rounded profile. Let's discuss each section in detail.

GMAT score

Being an ISB applicant, you should be aware that the GMAT score is an important factor in the evaluation process. What signifies a good GMAT score depends on the competitiveness of the program and your profile. The average GMAT score for the class of 2022 was 713. So what is the score you need to have that makes you confident of getting an interview invite?

As we discussed earlier 30% of the evaluation factor is the test score. As you score more on the GMAT/GRE your probability of securing an admit also increases.

Analyze the essay questions

You have to submit two essays along with the application for the ISB PGP program. If you are a reapplicant, you need to submit an additional essay.

Essay topics for ISB PGP 2024 admission

Essay 1: Provide an honest portrayal of yourself, emphasizing your strengths and weaknesses. Highlight the key elements that have shaped your personal journey. Give relevant illustrations as needed. (400 words)

Essay 2: Contemplate two distinct situations – one where you experienced success and another where you faced failure. Delve into the personal and interpersonal lessons you learned from these instances. (400 words)

Essay 3: Given your previous experience and future aspirations, how do you plan to use the PGP at ISB to fulfill your professional goals? (250 words) [optional]

Before writing your essay you need to understand the purpose of it. Your unique personal quality will be identified which will make the admissions committee realize the value you will be adding to the diverse class.

Keep yourself updated with the ISB essay analysis, to make use of the insights and tips revealed by Sanjay Dhingra, Ex Admission Officer at ISB, Chief Mentor & Managing Partner of ISBmantra.

ISB YLP Essay Analysis, we have discussed the YLP essay and sample essay structure in this article.

Recommendation letter

Another important part of the application is the recommendation letter. You need to submit the details about the person who is going to provide the recommendation (the evaluator) to ISB. He/She will be sent the evaluation form by email and information on how to fill it. The recommender has to provide details about your strengths, weaknesses, leadership skills, and achievements.

This gives an idea to the admission committee of your ability which helps in determining whether you are a good fit for the program. So choose the evaluator who knows you well and helps you in the detailed structuring of your profile.

Be thorough with what is required to craft the perfect ISB PGP Letter of Recommendation while applying.

The evaluation form has to be submitted on or before the application deadline.

Now that you know what they expect and where you are, you should create an application strategy.

7. Create an application strategy

According to Prashant Tibrewal, founder of ISBmantra - “MBA selection at ISB is a holistic process that evaluates an applicant on multiple parameters, some of the primary ones being test score, academic performance, leadership potential, career progression, career goal clarity, and extracurricular participation.

Most successful applicants start preparing at least a year in advance. This includes working on their GMAT or GRE preparation, participating in activities that demonstrate their leadership skills, taking initiatives at work or beyond work, networking with ISB alumni and learning about the school, and above all, researching one's own career goals.

All that one does during this one year, and during one's entire professional and academic career, translates to stories that one can present through the application essays required by ISB. Active development of essays is just the final step into the process. ISB typically requires an applicant to answer two essay questions. Over the years, the first one has been about one's leadership experience and examples, and the second one relates to one's career goals.

Developing rich answers to these questions requires multiple iterations, and allocating anything between 30-45 days may work fairly well for most candidates. Reapplicants, and applicants with higher professional experience, may want to commit some extra time to their application, given the additional work required in presenting the depth and breadth of their experience, and because they are expected to present strong career goal clarity.”

Prashant Tibrewal, Founder and Senior Consultant at ISBmantra

Knowing how early you should start preparing for applying to ISB, the next question would be in which round you should apply for ISB. It is always better to apply in round 1 of the application which reduces the stress to wait till the end.

Even if you don't have a strong profile, your performance at the interview can help you get an admit to ISB. So make sure you prepare well. It is important you are confident of what you have mentioned in the application & essays and it is also important to know what to say, what not to say, and how to say.

Candidates who applied to ISB in the previous years are required to write an essay detailing the improvements in their profile. This is the best opportunity to convince the school that you have indulged in introspection to evolve a fresh perspective and enhanced your eligibility by upskilling or retooling.

If you applied through the Young Leaders Program (YLP), you do not need to write the reapplicant essay.

Essay topic – Please use this space to explain significant improvements in your profile since your last application to the ISB PGP.

If you applied in R1 last year and are applying in R1 again, you have had almost a year to plan afresh. Recapitulate the entire effort you may have expended to improve your profile.

If you applied in R2 last year and are now applying in R1, you have had just about 8 months, and this span may not reflect significant changes in your profile.

Did you still create opportunities to enhance your skills? You presented certain career goals in your last application. Did you take up professional initiatives and self-learning opportunities to move towards your professed career goals? Did you assess what might have gone wrong, talk to alumni and industry experts and attempt to position yourself better this year?

If your GMAT score was not good enough, were you willing to push yourself and retake the test? If you ended up scoring the same again – the school will still appreciate your intent and your commitment to the goal of doing the MBA at ISB.

Talk about the new projects, new learnings from these projects, things that you got to do for the first time, interactions you have had that had an impact on you and your career plans. Do not forget to include the experiences that helped you refine your core and soft skills further.

If you presented a goal or a career plan last year that you failed to justify in the interview; or if, after more thorough research, you have decided to opt for an alternative plan that you can validate, do not hesitate to make a statement.

Feel free to present the specifics of the research you engaged in to arrive at a more rational career plan. For all logical purposes, this is a better approach than presenting the same career plans again, when you are not too confident about being able to substantiate them in the interview.

The modular design of the curriculum and several planned interventions allow participants in the program to promptly apply freshly imbibed knowledge to live, workplace challenges and evolve world-class solutions.

This program is similar to a Weekend Executive Program, because it allows participants to continue working in existing roles while attending the mandatory 432 contact hours and taking up the 24 courses that are incorporated.

Here is our analysis of the essay prompts and some tips on writing the ISB PGPpro essays, with inputs from the expert team at ISBmantra, comprising Former ISB Admissions Officers.

Main Essay

One of the intrinsic values at the Indian School of Business is “to develop principled, future leaders who improve lives around the world…" Please discuss how you will contribute towards this mission citing examples from your past work experience and activities? (400 words max)

This PGPpro application essay clearly focuses on evaluating the candidate’s existing aptitude and leadership potential, in an effort to identify the most prospective applicants in the pool. Nothing reflects inherent potential more than proven performance does. Hence, PGPpro applicants need to take stock of their individual performance records, especially in areas of leadership, teamwork, and impact.

The clue is provided – “to develop principled, future leaders who improve lives around the world…”. Isolate one or two instances of having taken the initiative – as ‘future leaders’ are prone to do – and of having demonstrated a ‘principled’ outlook, while implementing that initiative. Your ethical perspective will reveal itself in the stand that you took and the means that you adopted, to achieve your goal.

Among different achievements, you may focus on instances that created the greatest impact on the organization/department/institution; in terms of significant cost savings, impressive crisis management, or process innovations that left a lasting impact.

Sometimes, it’s not about the end but the means – did you do something that allowed you to create a positive impact on your team or your client? It’s ok if it didn’t directly result in tangible benefits for the organization, but if it helped you demonstrate strong leadership, you may always talk about the long-term impact it will have on the organization.

Further, you will need to answer the second part of the question – “how you will contribute towards the mission”. This may be addressed by touching upon your future plans in terms of creating a larger impact. Discuss a future plan that proposes to implement a constructive and inclusive outcome within the same domain that you presently operate in or one that is reasonably relevant to the line of work you are engaged in. You may either relate your future plans with the past projects discussed in the essay or build on the past experience and present how there are larger goals in place.

Finally, there should be some correlation that you will need to establish between your future plans and the PGPpro. This will essentially be the “Why PGPpro” and “Why ISB” answer but presented in just about 80-100 words. Use the opportunity to highlight the gains you expect to take away from the program, by consolidating your competencies, in readiness for a rewarding and fulfilling future.

Scholarship Essay

Why should the Admissions Committee offer you over other qualified candidates? (250 words max)

Justifying your appeal for a scholarship will not be easy. Do not project too many justifications. Choose the most compelling one and corroborate it with realistic and convincing facts. Never overlook the fact that numerous others will have similar validations to propose.

Make a statement to support your scholarship request by touching upon both ‘merit’ and ‘need’. The admission committee is keen to admit applicants with strong and substantial profiles as aspirants are, to be selected to join this program. If you have strong credentials and an impressive record of noteworthy performance in your field, do not hesitate to position yourself as a deserving candidate.

Talk about the inspiration/motivation that led to your best achievements. Further, establish how your presence in the class will add good value to the experience of others. If possible, touch upon the uniqueness of your role or the industry you represent.

If the need is the primary concern, state the pertinent details without being apologetic or looking for sympathy. Ensure that your credentials have been presented in the best light possible because most scholarship applications are justified by strong merit backed by real need.

Additional Information (Optional)

Additional Information: Kindly share information that you feel is relevant for the Admissions Committee to be aware. For example: current or past gaps in education or employment, professional achievements, awards or other information relevant to your application. (250 words max)

The ‘Additional Information’ is a 250-word golden opportunity. Do not squander it by crowding your response with too many or irrelevant pieces of information. Do not repeat any information already presented in other essays.

Choose to clarify any points of ambiguity in terms of career track record or academic credentials. This move will preempt possible future demands for clarification. Any awards or tokens of recognition received can be stated here.

Personal areas of interest; especially if they are unique should feature in this essay response. Even uncommon leisure time activities can serve the purpose of highlighting interesting aspects of your personality. The idea is to demonstrate your passion by providing specific details, instead of just stating that you love music, sports, reading, etc.

Try to incorporate initiatives undertaken within the workspace or outside it, which illustrate a larger vision and reflect commitment, concern, and a result-oriented objective.

Role Description

Describe the department/organizational unit for which you are responsible. Relate it to the whole organization in terms of size, scope, and autonomy of responsibility. What human resources, budget, and capital investment are you responsible? (Maximum 300 words)

Describing the existing role and establishing its relevance in the context of the overall organizational setup should be undertaken with care. The essay evaluator should be able to promptly visualize the organizational structure and identify your role in the context of the whole.

The objective of this essay prompt is to weigh the value and significance attached to your role. Help to quantify the assessment by providing numbers to reflect the size and scope of your role, in itself, and when placed in perspective within the larger organizational framework. Figures for project size, for sales and revenue, can all be factored in.

The degree of autonomy you enjoy is a critical indicator; hence, discuss the scope of your decision-making authority and the body of stakeholders who are directly impacted by your role or decisions. Budget amounts handled in your individual capacity is another indicator. If you helped set up a Brownfield or Greenfield project, provide outlay cost figures.

Your interactions with the organization’s leadership and the teams you manage directly can all feature in your Human Resource Management effectiveness quotient.

By consolidating all the above indicators, you should be able to present a comprehensive, professional profile that will facilitate a deeper understanding of your role.

Re-applicant essay

Re-applicant Essay: Briefly highlight any professional or personal developments since your last submission (250 words max)

If you are a reapplicant to the PGPpro, you will be required to answer the re-applicant essay. The re-applicant essay focuses on what might have changed since your last application and how your skills may have evolved over time.

Alongside whatever real, professional advances can be related,an evolved perspective can be projected. Rather than listing statements such as, ’I have matured’; make an effort to illustrate, with instances of a fresh outlook and an ongoing appetite for transformation, innovation, and accelerated growth.

The answers to these questions must be tuned to endorse your decision to make a second attempt.

Beyond your professional profile, if there are opportunities that you created or sought outside work, to enhance your personal profile or skills, you may also discuss them here.

ISB PGPpro Sample Essay

At ISBmantra, we help applicants identify their strengths, align their future plans with the industry trends and enable them to articulate their stories in the most effective manner – well within the word limit prescribed in the essay prompt.

Here is a PGPpro essay sample for the principled leadership question. While this sample should help you get a high-level understanding of putting together a good essay, it is important to realize that each applicant has a unique profile. Therefore, what to present, how to present, and how much to present, will vary significantly based on the profile of the applicant.

With a career consciously shaped in the healthcare sector, I have taken up several initiatives to add value to not just my organization, but also to society and people. My career focus on data-driven analytics has helped me collaborate with diverse stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem to develop a holistic understanding of the sector. One of my most impactful initiatives that tested my innovation as well as leadership skills is the Pharmacogenomics & Drug Interaction study that I took up recently at Novartis.

The main objective of this study is to identify Pharmacy Claims-Based Co-morbidity Index and Risk Adjustment and measure the “burden of illness score” based on chronic medications used, to present the expense factor of the illness. Working closely with the senior leadership, I created a team of 4 and worked from scratch to achieve the following:

Develop and implement re-engineering process flow diagrams by working closely with internal & external consultants, for a smooth data injection process inside the EVICO system

Project management using the RACI matrix (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed)

Analyze data and assess outliers, integrating the data with the required tools

Develop user stories by using the 3 C’s (Card, Conversation & Confirmation) approach

This effort delivered significant results in the context of the organization as well as the industry. We were able to reduce the processing time by 10 times. The brand team is now able to better assess the impact of promotional activities, effectiveness, efficiency, and long-term returns. Above all, with a better understanding of the drug consumption patterns, the reports generated are now used to build data driven hypothesis for unexplored research areas.

With my organization having identified me as a key resource to drive its data-based projects, I see the PGP-Pro as the perfect platform to upskill myself in areas of data analytics, data-backed decision-making, developing strategic roadmaps, managing and mentoring teams and collaborating with multiple stakeholders. With my current experience and exposure, I am committed to further contributing to the healthcare sector, working on the aspects of Accessibility and Affordability. While I engage with the industry in these areas, I also see myself contributing at ISB, presenting rich insights gained through my exposure to medicine and healthcare. With data driving all business decisions already, I will also look to ignite data-oriented discussions in the class – contributing therefore, to the learning of my peers, during the program and after!

Overall, the PGPpro uses the application essays as a tool to frame a window that displays the mindset of the applicant. More than the facts you may choose to meticulously present, the compulsions that drive your stand and even the underlying force of attitude that determines your choices will be revealed to the trained reader. This is your cue to organize your thoughts and opinions in a manner that suits a passionate professional and an industry leader of the future.

ISB YLP is equivalent to Harvard 2+2, where you can apply in the pre-final or final year of graduation to get an admit to ISB PGP. Once you get an admit to the YLP program, you have to gain 20 months of full-time work experience to join the PGP program.

Are you a college student, aspiring to get an admit to the PGP (MBA) program at ISB? Do you believe you have good leadership qualities but don’t have the required work experience to join the full-time MBA program at ISB? Why wait till you gain two years of work experience to get an admit? The Young Leaders Program (YLP) at ISB is a deferred entry to the full-time MBA program.

However, you might have a few more questions like

Does getting an admit to YLP guarantee admission to the ISB PGP program?

What if I don’t acquire the required experience before the commencement of the PGP full-time program?

We have answered all these questions in this article. Here is the outline of this article:

Case study : Sanchit’s journey from YLP to PGP

“My journey from YLP to PGP was very smooth because of the way the YLP program is designed by ISB. ISB conducts 4 learning weekends spread over 2 years across both campuses, where actual ISB professors teach you relevant subjects like leadership, managing change, finance, statistics etc. These weekends also offer a great chance to interact with the current class, ISB professors, YLP cohort and gives a clear picture about what to expect at ISB.

This helped me a lot as I got a head start visavis the PGP class, got clarity on what I should do at ISB and post ISB. Apart from these learning weekends, ISB helped connect me to other YLP alums and ISB alums working in the areas I aspired to work in. This actually helped me start preparing for these roles, sectors etc well in advance.”

The school, therefore, isn't looking to fill its seats through the YLP, but to ensure that final and pre-final year students, who have done exceptionally well in their academic career and have demonstrated some key skills, are given a chance to secure an early admit and focus on their career.

What is a decent GMAT & GRE score to get into YLP ISB?

Given that the YLP entry channel is more competitive than the direct application to the PGP, the test score remains an important parameter for the final selection. Successful YLP admits typically present a GMAT score of 720+ or a GRE score of 328+.

While these are scores that can give an applicant an edge over the competition, at ISBmantra we have several applicants who have received admits with scores much lower than this, primarily because they had a diverse/strong profile, well-developed application, and a high interview score.

What is the difference between YLP and EEO at ISB?

Both YLP and EEO are gateways to enter the full-time PGP program at ISB.
