ISB and the Indus Entrepreneurs, commonly known as TiE have been collaborating for several years, to conduct an event called TiE-ISB Connect, with the stated mission of promoting the spirit of entrepreneurship and a start-up network in Hyderabad. This 2-day event has succeeded in creating waves of awareness about the start-up ecosystem. TiE was founded in 1992, in Silicon Valley, by a group of flourishing entrepreneurs and professionals originally belonging to the Indus region, with the goal of encouraging and nurturing entrepreneurship through mentoring, networking, education, incubating, and funding. It now operates across 18 countries with more than 13000 members. The Investor-Connect part of the event connects aspiring entrepreneurs to Indian PE/VC/Seed/Angel funds. The Mentor Connect part of the event allows these entrepreneurs to have a one on one mentoring sessions with serial entrepreneurs for their specific business concerns. The event also allows people with unique business concepts to pitch their ideas for investments, associates and mentors. Five selected stat-ups have an opportunity to present to five angel investors à la ‘Shark Tank’.
In 2016, the seventh edition of TiE-ISB Connect was conducted. A learning solutions start-up called Sugar Maths was adjudged the ‘Best Technology Start-up’. Sugar Maths makes learning advanced Math easier and more appealing, by using gamification. The product targets students from Class 1 to 10 and covers topics across CBSE, ICSE, State Boards and international curricula like IB/IGCSE.
The objective of TiE-ISB is to give entrepreneurs an opportunity to learn, network, create and grow. With several start-ups failing due to lack of mentorship, inadequate funds, the absence of the right people in the right place or even the non-availability of opportunity, TiE-ISB has served as the quintessential platform, where entrepreneurs can showcase their ideas and explore their potential for success.
